3D Truss to 3D Truss and other fun details

I haven't been able to find a good way to make this connection other than with a simple weld, which I'm not sure would hold. It would look like the connection of an OWSJ to an I-beam, plain and simple. Another approach would be to go with something more like this [LINK]. But this would break the HSS member and maybe make the vertical structure more prone to buckling. The closest precedent I could find is Foster's Sainsbury Centre, but his vertical 3D truss does not extend beyond the connection. What can I do? Weld? Pin? Bolt? Bubble gum?
Second Issue. My floor plate is curved along the x-axis, and corrugated steel is not. What can I do to put a a corrugated steel decking with concrete topping on my building? Do I divide the floor plate into trapezoids and have each section use corrugated steel going on it's tangent, or is it possible to have a custom curved piece of corrugated steel rolled just for me?
The same issue arises when I layout the duct work, I have to find a way to curve it along the main hallway.
Same issue with cutting a longitudinal section... Damn curves.

Regarding the curved panels on the side of my building... Acrylic it is.

No sleep til Final



















In  the critique they mentioned the disparity in ceiling heights of lower levels. They told me to add a column on the edge of the mezzanine to get rid of transfer beam. Told me to add bigger washrooms in the DMZ, also to separate it from the kitchenette.
The projection room on the DMZ work level projects on to a translucent surface which can also be seen form the DMZ retail space below. Allowing people to see, real time, what's going on in the DMZ.
And apparently my shaft is too small.
They also suggested I make the entrance to the residential separate, or close of at night, but I'm unsure of what that will do to my ground level. 

A note: The cafe is not the third space, it is a compliment to it. This will bring more people into the building, especially in mornings when students pass through the building to get to class; it is the entrance to Ryerson. I can use this opportunity for the people to be exposed to the DMZ with displays along the projected line where DMZ projects can be shown, similar to how coffee places make you look at the delicious pastries as you wait, I can bring people's attention to the delicious DMZ projects.

Quick Question on Stairs

Is it bad to have each apartment have their own set of stairs? This way each apartment will be like small row houses, arranged in a vertical neighborhood. This will also allow both my individual living spaces and bedrooms to receive lighting when they are arranged on a longitudinal array along the edge of my building.
This would of course only work for the non-barrier-free units.

Late Post

Sorry for the late post. I was away on a me week.
These are my residential levels, with shared apartment style housing on the lower level, and several single apartments for married students. The entire floor is accesible so there is no need to segregate folks on wheelchairs. On the west face is a shared space on each floor, making a strong, and shared, expression of work and community on both Yonge and Gould Street. The space is of double height on the shared-apartments level, and more enclosed on the married level. 

 This section shows the relationship between the two levels. The rooms are accessed by corridors along a double skin facade. Through this strategy I was able to get natural light into the apartments from both the North and South face. Bedrooms receiving light through more private openings on the South face, while living and shared spaces receive light from the more public Gould face.

Time Lapse of the First Night of Model Making

Once again Section ONE serves as the vanguard of the studio, taking the initiative to get their site model done well and on time (more or less).  Though Wednesday evening may have been a long night, it was worth it as it allowed students to quickly move on to develop their design work for the upcoming Project Two deadline.



A note to the other sections, this time lapse was done where each frame was taken every 3 seconds (and the video is 24 fps) so between the two videos there are several hours of elapsed time! Thankfully Section ONE will be out of the chaos in the fabrication workshop as the deadline approaches... until they get to their individual models...

DMZ Visit

Today Section ONE had a great opportunity to get a tour of the DMZ at Ryerson University.
We were fortunate to have not only toured the facility but also get one on one sessions with two great organizations in the DMZ, ARB Labs and TAD (Tactile Audio Displays).  Here are a few highlights of Section ONE experiencing the facility.

Section ONE

These are the members of Section ONE from ASC401 during the Winter 2013 term.

Over the next few months these students will use this platform to showcase their design work as it evolves from concept to developed design proposal.  The collective pool of their research, insights, and design iterations will ensure that their respective designs will be as robust and developed as possible.
