Demo of the AR Project in Section ONE Studio
Using Augmented Reality (AR), Section ONE studio is the testing ground for mixing virtualized ideas from CAD into real tangible conditions such as the physical context model created for Project 2. Though still early in development, the prototype of the AR interface has been deployed in the section and will be free to utilize by students in the section.

The way the system works is basically referencing an origin point in the virtual model (in this case the Northwest corner of the site) and exporting it as an OBJ file in the appropriate units at full scale. The origin is referenced in the real world with the computer-generated pattern (similar to a QR code). Once the prototype visualization app is run on the computer, students may load the model OBJ (including material settings) and calibrate the appropriate visualization and reference code scale. Once that has been done, the model appear in real time on the screen in a mixed reality environment. This is only the initial test, however today Section ONE demonstrated that the prototype worked with a student's model (however face counts should be modest).

DMZ Visit
Today Section ONE had a great opportunity to get a tour of the DMZ at Ryerson University.
We were fortunate to have not only toured the facility but also get one on one sessions with two great organizations in the DMZ, ARB Labs and TAD (Tactile Audio Displays). Here are a few highlights of Section ONE experiencing the facility.

Digital Media Zone
Section ONE will be visiting the Digital Media Zone on Wednesday, February 6th in two groups in order to prevent huge congestion and distract the workplace environment. All students will be in studio on Wednesday at 10AM for a briefing.
The groups are as follows:
Group ONE
Ailsa, Danielle, Ariel, Gary, Ray, Luke, Jay
Group TWO
Aris, Kate, Hovag, Soroush, Mahan, Steven, Demitri
As a reminder, students are to come with appropriate questions that would help fulfill development of design strategies as they proceed into their final project. The DMZ is more than simply a workspace and as students develop their programming in the main level(s) it is important to investigate what goes on beyond workstations. Activities such as beta testing, networking events, and high profile visits are just a few of the notable things that go on in the DMZ. Bring questions along with your cameras!

The Lot
Having completed the first project that ideally got everyone thinking about the level of assembly and detail as well as what the Digital Media Zone at Ryerson University encapsulates, the second year students are now charged with developing a design for a multi-unit residential graduate residence with a ground level street address that showcases Ryerson's premiere facility to bring innovations to market.
The site for the proposal sits on the currently empty lot formerly the Empress Hotel, and more recently known as the former home of the Salad King Restaurant. Having endured a disastrous building collapse followed by a six-alarm fire, the site has been abandoned until recent developments in the area.
It is hoped that students will propose something that will develop a project that adequately fills this void in the downtown core and boundary of Ryerson University.
