Is it possible to have a steel stair frame with glass steps and handrails over my main atrium without necessarily supporting it with columns reaching my ground floor. I was thinking suspension cables but my roof is far too high. Off the slabs?
It is possible to have structural glass stairs - from the Harrod's Store in London to the Apple Stores in San Francisco and beyond, they exist but are not fire stairs. They are merely convenience stairs. Suspension off of slabs is pretty much the route to go with. Go take a look at the glass in architecture books in the library as they have several examples to literally steal details from. I do not know what you mean by a steel stair frame but you can definitely do what you are describing with tension rods and cables.
